Solar street lights in the UK

Our solar street lighting is not only illuminating residential areas, but even helping address anti-social behaviour too. Here’s how.

The situation

Burnham is a village in Buckinghamshire, UK. Like many communities of its size, Burnham had recently invested in an expensive Multi Use Games Area – a place where children and young people can play sports safely. However, lack of cost-effective lighting meant the areas were scarcely used during the winter nights.

The solution

Quick, easy and inexpensive to install – and virtually free to run – our solar powered street lights were an ideal way of lighting Burnham’s Multi Use Games Area. The lights could be time-controlled to come on at dusk and turn off at 10pm. Plus, the intelligent design of the lights meant that the quality of the light itself could be adjusted depending on the activity and the desired effect – providing anything from a welcoming warm glow to more intense white lighting for sports games. Infra Red Motion Detectors were also an effective way of lighting dark footpaths.

The outcome

The lights don’t just illuminate the Multi Use Games Area – they make it more welcoming. As a result, young people are attracted to the area, rather than elsewhere in the village where they are more likely to be drawn into Anti Social Behaviour. This ‘moth to a light’ effect has seen positive results in Burnham’s community and has been welcomed by community police officers, council workers and Burnham residents alike.
